Nostalgia, Newly Served
For many Singaporeans who grew up in the 80s and 90s, OG Orchard Point was the place to shop. Hao Mart Pte. Ltd. saw the chance to give this familiar landmark a new life as a food and lifestyle destination.
Y2G led the conversion of the five-storey department store into a supermarket with 22 new F&B units. This is a major A&A and a 9 month projects.
The challenges
Fitting a new kitchen exhaust system for 22 F&B outlets into an existing structure was the first major hurdle. The ducting had to perform well without compromising the look of the spaces. The architect leading the team to route the 22 exhaust pipe to the back and penetrate through the car park’s floor as URA do not allow any exhaust fan facing the front and 2 sides of the elevations.
The ageing building also needed upgrading to meet current SCDF Fire Code requirements. On top of this, the change of use called for careful coordination with PUB, NEA and LTA on refuse handling, loading bays, restrooms and parking.
The design
The client focused the budget on the interiors. On the ground floor, the supermarket and F&B spaces flow into one another, creating a lively, continuous experience. Along Orchard Road, light artworks animate the frontage and draw passers-by in.
The result is more than a retail refresh. A well-loved shopping venue has been reborn as a modern culinary destination.
